To celebrate the 70th anniversary of Orquesta Aragon, Lusafrica is releasing this exceptional limited edition 4 CD set with 71 tracks (over 4 hours of music) and a 24 page booklet, illustrated with numerous pictures, telling thestory of these legends of Cuban music. Ever since 1939 when the group was formed in Cienfuegos, Cuba, Orquesta Aragon has never stopped recording and touringworldwide. The 70th anniversary album gathers on three CDs recordings made by Egrem in Cuba - most of which are unavailable nowadays. The fourth CD is an anthology of the recordings made for Lusafrica between 1998 and 2001 including two previously unreleased tracks. The orchestra was formed in 1939 by double bass player Orestes Aragon Cantero. In the 50s Havana was in the grip of thecha-cha craze and with the great composer Beny Moré Orquesta Aragon became the emblematic cha-cha orchestra. The Orquesta entered its golden age in the 50s and 60s with a line-up featuring Rafael Lay (band leader and 1st violin) and other names that have become legendary in Cuban music. It won wide acclaim in the United States where the great NatKing Cole added the famous El Bodeguero to his repertoire. The legendary "Music-Hall de Cuba" tour was organised in1965. More than 100 artists - including Orquesta Aragon - performed in Paris, Warsaw, Moscow and Berlin. Africa in the 70swas another great adventure for the Orquesta. Their initial destinations were Guinea and Mali, but many other tours followedand they became supreme stars from Guinea to Congo and Benin to Zanzibar.Between 1997 and 2001 the group released three albums on the Lusafrica label
